World Cup of soccer a tough sell to Afrikaners

By Paul Logothetis
July 1, 2009

BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa - In the first few months after apartheid finally ended, a single sporting event in 1995 turned a nation of soccer fans into rugby followers and helped begin a movement of atonement.

Wearing a Springboks jersey, Nelson Mandela's presentation of the rugby World Cup trophy to South Africa on home soil was a defining moment for a country barely removed from its segregated past, with Mandela's gesture accelerating racial reconciliation in a country that had been divided since 1948.

NASCAR News - NASCAR confirms Mayfield tested positive for meth

By Accosiated Press
July 1, 2009

CHARLOTTE (AP) — NASCAR confirmed Wednesday that suspended driver Jeremy Mayfield tested positive for methamphetamines.

The confirmation came outside federal court after Mayfield's attorney mentioned the illegal substance several times during a 45-minute argument against the driver's indefinite suspension. Court recessed after Bill Diehl's argument and is set to reconvene Wednesday afternoon.

"We will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jeremy Mayfield did violate the NASCAR substance abuse policy and tested positive for methamphetamines," spokesman Ramsey Poston said.

Diehl argued in court that Mayfield has never shown any characteristics of a meth abuser, and if he used the drug at the levels NASCAR has suggested, Mayfield would be "either a walking zombie or he's dead.

NASCAR News - Identity crisis: Can NASCAR reach old, new fans effectively?

By Nate Ryan
July 1, 2009

When NASCAR was born on the sands of Daytona Beach, Fla., 61 years ago, its fan base likely wasn't much different from its racing heroes. A sport spawned by moonshine running starred undereducated white males from the South who subsisted on modest incomes.

As it returns to Daytona this weekend for a July 4 race celebrating America, NASCAR is coping with maintaining the interest of a fan base that increasingly reflects the country's 21st century sophistication Statistics say its followers are richer, smarter and more technologically savvy than ever.

Bootleggers have given way to bloggers — and the shift has occurred as fans have become a focal point for re-energizing a phenomenon whose once surging popularity has lost some steam.

MLB News - Pujols, Wright head predicted N.L. All-Star roster

By Stan McNeal
June 30, 2009

Give the fans their props. In the latest voting for National League All-Star starters, they have the right player at each of the eight positions. With less than three days left before voting ends Thursday night, there isn't much time to mess up.

Selecting the starting lineup is the easy part. Picking the remaining 24 players is more challenging (players pick a backup at every position, five starting pitchers and three relievers. N.L. manager Charlie Manuel then oversees managers' selections for seven spots, and the final spot is determined in an online vote featuring five players chosen by the commissioner's office).

When considering reserves, don't forget that every club has to be represented, including ones that don't deserve to be (the Cubs, for example). Three catchers are needed in case of extra innings. And even with 32 players on the roster, someone will be snubbed.

MLB News - Red Sox duo locked in Close All Star Votes -- Yokilis pulls ahead, Pedroia very near in balloting

By Doug Miller
June 30, 2009

On his march to the Major Leagues, the little guy who plays second base for the Boston Red Sox has heard over and over again that he can't, but then he laces up his spikes, throws on his glove and proves everyone wrong.

Now Dustin Pedroia is trying to do it again.

Trailing Ian Kinsler of the Texas Rangers for weeks in American League All-Star voting, the reigning AL Most Valuable Player moved within a relative hair of the leader with a little more than two days remaining before voting closes for the 80th Midsummer Classic, which will be played July 14 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

It's been a steady climb toward the top for Pedroia, who trailed Kinsler by fewer than 59,000 votes in last week's voting update, and now is fewer than 7,000 votes behind. Once again, the Yankees' Robinson Cano and the Blue Jays' Aaron Hill follow the top two.

NFL News - NFL mock draft 2010: Big 12 makes big early splash -- Half-dozen Oklahoma standouts litter this version of Round 1

June 30, 2009

The 2009 college football season is still a couple months away, so what better time to check in on the nation's top NFL draft prospects for 2010? As you would expect, the initial set of 32 has plenty of flavors, from offense to defense, seniors to juniors and former Heisman winners to just darn good players.

Before you dive in to the early pick projections, here are few things you'll probably notice:

The Sooners lead a Big 12 boom. Starting with one of those Heisman winners, QB Sam Bradford going to Seattle, there are a half-dozen Oklahoma standouts in this version of Round 1. Not to be forgotten, the intrastate rival Oklahoma State Cowboys are represented twice. In total, it's Big 12 dominance, going 11 for 32, including a Cornhusker defensive star at first overall.

So just who is this guy named Suh? It's been a while since the Blackshirts have had such a dominant player, but Ndamukong Suh looks the part of the next great front-line mauler.

MLB News - Stars help give baseball a pulse in inner cities

By Tim Brown
June 29, 2009

LOS ANGELES – A baseball rolled through a dirt infield into center field.

A little boy flung his tiny aluminum bat and took off.

Two others chased the ball into center field.

Parents, dozens of them, yelled encouragement, and coaches official and unofficial waved that little boy past first base and then around third and toward home.

Dust swirled at home plate when the little boy arrived, and the umpire shouted, “Safe!” and the people cheered as though Manny Ramirez(notes) himself had hit this home run.

Covered in half the infield and some of the third-base line, the boy stood and didn’t bother to dust himself off, but turned and found his parents in the stands.
It looked like baseball, sounded like baseball, felt like baseball.

Only, we’d been told it doesn’t exist here, a few blocks from Crenshaw Boulevard in South Central, in places like it, in inner cities where basketball is king, baseball is tedious and hope is scarce.

MLB News - Major League Baseball names its O.C. 'all-star' -- Newport Beach resident named as Angels representative in St. Louis.

By Eric Carpenter
June 29, 2009

ANAHEIM – It's official: Christine Shively is an all-star.

The Newport Beach resident, 50, will be the Angels representative at the July 14 baseball All-Star Game in St. Louis.

Major League Baseball officials have announced that Shively garnered the most votes in the "All-Stars Among Us" campaign, sponsored by MLB and People Magazine – a competition meant to recognize everyday people doing great things in their communities.

Shively founded an organization called Knots of Love in 2007 to provide knitted and crocheted caps for cancer patients who've lost their hair. To date, more than 20,000 caps have been handed out to at least 150 cancer centers across the nation and in Canada and Mexico.

NBA News - Shaq goes back to No. 33

June 26 2009

CLEVELAND -- Shaquille O'Neal hasn't picked out a house in Cleveland yet. He has chosen a jersey number -- his old one.

Shaq is going back to No. 33.

Traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday, the 15-time All-Star has decided to wear 33, the team confirmed Friday. That's the number O'Neal wore in high school and at LSU before turning pro. O'Neal wore No. 32 when he was in Orlando, Miami and Phoenix.

When he was with the Los Angeles Lakers, O'Neal wore 34 because Nos. 32 and 33 were retired for Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

O'Neal's trade -- and the Orlando Magic's deal to get Vince Carter -- overshadowed this year's NBA draft. The Cavaliers had been working on a possible trade for months with Phoenix for O'Neal and finally agreed to a package that sent Ben Wallace, Sasha Pavlovic, a second-round pick in next year's draft and $500,000 to the Suns.

In Cleveland, O'Neal will be teammates with LeBron James, the latest in a long line of superstar partners to pair with the entertaining enter. O'Neal has previously with Anfernee Hardaway, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade and Steve Nash. He won three titles with Bryant and the Lakers and one with Wade.

NBA News - Magic agree to acquire Nets’ Carter

By Adrian Wojnarowski
June 25, 2009

The New Jersey Nets have agreed in principle to send Vince Carter and Ryan Anderson to the Orlando Magic for Rafer Alston(notes), Tony Battie and Courtney Lee(notes), two league executives told Yahoo! Sports.

The Nets will draft Louisville shooting guard Terrence Williams at No. 11, if he’s still available.

The move frees the Nets of the three years and $52 million remaining on Carter’s contract. Only $4 million of his $18 million final season is guaranteed.
