NFL Notes - Eagles, Packers’ futures brighter than Giants’

By Charles Robinson
November 20, 2009

With seven weeks left in the NFL’s regular season, it’s time for the annual glance into the crystal ball. Mathematically, we’re looking at a wide-open race for the postseason. But realistically, the 17 teams with a winning record have all but eliminated any dark horses in the playoff race.

This year, elite level quarterbacks will play a major role in how the remainder of the season plays out. Indeed, I think 10 of the 12 playoff teams this season will be represented by a Pro Bowl-level quarterback, and the other two – the Ravens’ Joe Flacco and Packers’ Aaron Rodgers – are having upper-echelon seasons.

With that in mind, here is what the crystal ball sees for the postseason seeding, as well as a handful of teams that will narrowly miss out …

NASCAR News - Inaugural Chase was best yet

By Jay Hart
November 20, 2009

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — After inhaling smoke from Jimmie Johnson’s three-, going on four-year burnout, the mind might be too hazy to remember if NASCAR’s Chase for the Championship ever produced a thriller.

It did, back in 2004.

That year, as the schedule wound its way down to south Florida for the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, five drivers still had a shot to win what was then known as the Nextel Cup. The suspense was palpable. No one knew what to expect, who would win and there was a real fear that a non-Chase driver would wreck one of the contenders, flipping the script on what was shaping up to be the Hollywood ending Brian France had dreamed of when he unveiled the controversial new points system 10 months earlier.

All the characters were in place, each with their own unique storyline. There was Johnson, the newcomer trying to win the title for his grieving car owner, who only a few weeks earlier had buried his son, brother and eight other family members and friends who perished in a plane crash. Jeff Gordon, the aging boy wonder, was going for that elusive fifth title. Dale Earnhardt Jr., the son of a legend, was trying to live up to his family name. Mark Martin was the 45-year-old veteran who’d finished second four times but had never won, and Kurt Busch was the bad boy who’d gotten his butt kicked by a fellow competitor a year earlier.

College Basketball News - Syracuse’s Johnson magic

By Jason King
November 20, 2009

NEW YORK — Late Friday night, shortly after his team’s 87-71 embarrassment of sixth-ranked North Carolina at Madison Square Garden, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim walked into his postgame news conference and smirked.

“I told you so,” he said.

Boeheim hadn’t predicted a win, but what he had promised months ago was that one of Syracuse’s newest players would also be its best. And so, after Iowa State transfer Wesley Johnson scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds against the defending national champions, Boeheim couldn’t help but rub it in a bit.

“What?” he said. “Did you think I was lying?”

Not exactly.

In two seasons at Iowa State, Johnson averaged 12.3 points and 6.1 rebounds, so it’s not as if people didn’t think he’d be effective.

NHL News - Pacific: Ducks glad to be back home after tough trip

By John Kreiser
November 19, 2009

Every team is glad to get home after a road trip, but few teams were happier to get home than the Anaheim Ducks were this week.

The Ducks start a seven-game homestand Thursday, and they'll need a big showing to get back into the playoff race after a nightmarish 0-3-1 trip that ended with a 5-2 loss at Pittsburgh Monday.

With his team struggling, not even a late-night flight back to the West Coast after the loss to the Penguins was enough to keep coach Randy Carlyle from holding practice Tuesday.

Soccer News - Road to South Africa: Regarding Henry

By Martin Rogers
November 19, 2009

The defining moment of World Cup qualifying’s final day was one that had no place being associated with the greatest event in international soccer.

Thierry Henry’s deliberate handball that set up France’s playoff victory against the Republic of Ireland has already sparked heavy and heated debate across the soccer globe. However, there is only one thing that needs to be known about the incident, and now, about Henry.

He is a cheat.

Whether his action is as serious as a baseball player taking steroids or a boxer loading his gloves is irrelevant. He deliberately and knowingly flouted the laws of the game to the direct benefit of his team. The only thing stopping this act from joining Diego Maradona’s Hand of God in eternal infamy is that this controversial goal took place in a playoff and the other in a World Cup quarterfinal.

Henry likes to portray himself as a moralist, an upholder of fair play and good sportsmanship. But when crunch time came, the Barcelona striker lowered himself to back-alley tactics and cheated a brave Irish team.
