Super Bowl XLIV - Brees and Saints win Super Bowl, 31-17 over Colts
By BARRY WILNER
February 7, 2010
MIAMI, Fla. The ultimate underdogs, they aint. Not anymore. The Saints are Super Bowl champions now.
Who Dat? Try Drew Brees, Sean Payton and a team that has reversed its embarrassing past, carrying an entire city to the top with it.
Put away those paper bags forever.
Brees and the Saints rallied to upset Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 Sunday night in one of pro footballs most thrilling title games.
We just believed in ourselves and we knew that we had an entire city and maybe an entire country behind us, said Brees, the games MVP. What can I say? I tried to imagine what this moment would be like for a long time, and its better than expected.
But not something many expected from these descendants of the hapless Aints, who were 5-point underdogs.

NCAA Football - Roundtable: Who surprised on Signing Day?
Februay 6, 2010
At the College Football Roundtable each week, we ask each member of the college football coverage staff for their opinion about a topic in the sport. Here is this week's question:
Olin Buchanan's answer:
California's 11th-place finish in the rankings is a big surprise considering the Bears' lackluster success in recent recruiting classes. This year's haul was Cal's highest-ranking class since 2005 -- and 31 places higher than last year's. Cal signed just one five-star prospect (DeSean Jackson in 2005) in the previous eight years combined, but nabbed two five-star recruits this year to join USC, Florida, Texas, Auburn and Florida State as the only programs to sign multiple five-star prospects. Further, both five-star prospects -- DE Chris Martin and S Keenan Allen -- were out-of-state recruits. Cal had to beat national champion Alabama for Allen, who is from North Carolina. The Bears signed four players ranked among the nation's top 38. Planned improvements and upgrades in facilities had to have helped. Still, that's absolutely amazing for a program that hasn't played in a big-time bowl in 50 years and is coming off a rather disappointing season.

World Cup Soccer - Potential World Cup stars
By Robin Hackett
February 6, 2010
The likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogba, Kaka, Franck Ribery, Fernando Torres, Xavi and Wayne Rooney are all expected to light up the stage this summer, but World Cups have had a habit of producing unexpected heroes.
The list of players to have made their names around the globe at previous tournaments includes Geoff Hurst for England in 1966, Grzegorz Lato for Poland in 1974, Enzo Scifo for Belgium in 1986, Toto Schillaci for Italy in 1990 and Yordan Letchkov for Bulgaria in 1994.
Here, Soccernet takes a look at a selection of players who could go on to outshine the biggest names when this year's tournament in South Africa gets underway on June 11.
Steven Pienaar (South Africa): Host countries have traditionally always enjoyed a measure of success at the World Cup and, while there are fears that South Africa could be the first to fail to make it beyond the group stages, they have every chance of reaching the second round after being drawn against France, Mexico and Uruguay - all sides that had difficulties in qualification.

NBA - Nugets see no reason to fear Lakers
By Marc J. Spears
February 5, 2010
Denver Nuggets coach George Karl believes he owns a recipe the rest of the NBA wishes it had: The Nuggets, Karl thinks, have all the ingredients necessary to beat the Los Angeles Lakers.
Karl wont reveal too many specifics about what it takes to conquer Kobe Bryant and the defending champs. But its clear the Nuggets arent lacking for confidence as the Western Conferences top two teams prepare to square off for the second time this season on Friday. Not only do the Nuggets think they know how to win against the Lakers, they believe they can beat them regularly.
George Karl says the Nuggets "know we can play this type of game and beat" the Lakers.
