Even the Baseball Writers Association of America couldnt screw up the voting for the 2008 National League Most Valuable Player, with the St. Louis Cardinals Albert Pujols the official winner over the Philadelphia Phillies Ryan Howard.
Only because of the long-standing dispute over what the Most Valuable Player means and the illogical voting patterns of the members of the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) did the baseball fans of America have to anxiously wait until the formal announcement on Monday afternoon to learn whether the man clearly most deserving of the award, St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols, would get shafted again or instead would finally pick up his second MVP in his eight years of National League dominance.
The rest of the baseball world had already spoken loudly and with one voice as to the best player in the Senior Circuit in 2008, not to mention the best man off the field, too.
Pete Newell, who coached UC Berkeley to the 1959 National Collegiate Athletic Assn. basketball title and was one of only three men to guide teams to National Invitation Tournament, NCAA and Olympic championships, died Monday. He was 93.
Newell, a resident of Rancho Santa Fe, died at the nearby home of Dr. Earl Shultz, one of his former Cal players who had been caring for him. Newell had been in poor health since lung surgery in 2005, his son Roger said.
By winning the then-prestigious NIT with the University of San Francisco in 1949, guiding Cal to the NCAA title and winning the 1960 Olympic gold medal with a roster that included Oscar Robertson, Jerry Lucas and Jerry West, Newell became the first coach to claim all three titles.
The only others are Dean Smith and Bob Knight.
West and a writer had planned to meet with Newell on Monday to do an interview for an upcoming book, Roger Newell said.
"He was my Olympic coach," West said later Monday. "He was my mentor. When you are around a guy like him, you realize how beloved he really is. He was a great teacher. He loved basketball. He loved to teach young kids how to play basketball."
NCAA Basketball News - Thabeet rolls on for No. 2 UConn
The Associated Press
November 15, 2008
STORRS, Conn. Hasheem Thabeet had 23 points and 17 rebounds to lead No. 2 Connecticut to a season-opening 81-55 win over Western Carolina on Friday.
The 7-foot-3 junior, who towered at least 7 inches over any defender for the Catamounts, also blocked five shots. He was 7 of 11 from the field, with most of his attempts from inside 5 feet.
No. 5 Pittsburgh 86, Fairleigh Dickinson 63
In Pittsburgh, DeJuan Blair was overpowering inside with 17 points and 13 rebounds in slightly more than a half and Pitt got a big lift from point guard Levance Fields' return from a broken foot.
The 265-pound Blair scored eight points during a 16-2 surge in the first 61/2 minutes as Pittsburgh won its 12th consecutive opener.
Carl Edwards is winning and making up ground, but history is against him in his quest to catch Jimmie Johnson.
No driver has come back to win the Cup title from the spot where Carl Edwards sits today -- 106 points down with two races to go.
The late Alan Kulwicki has the comeback record for the final two events, making up 85 points to top Bill Elliott and Davey Allison for the 1992 crown.
Kulwicki was 144 points back with four races to go, compared to a 198-point deficit Edwards had with four remaining. So in the past two races, Edwards has made up 92 points. Duplicate that in the last two and he's the champ.
NFL Super Bowl News - Mailbag: Playing so-so a no-no
By Woody Paige, The Denver Post
November 5, 2008
Rich from Colo. Springs laments mediocrity in Denver's pro sports
Woody - I just finished watching another horrible game by the Broncos and then followed that up with the Sharks-Avs game. Each of the four major pro franchises in Denver is underachieving. Which franchise will be first to throw off the shackles of ineptitude?
-- Rich, Colorado Springs
Rich - Interesting. Let me go in reverse order.
The Rockies won't. They're getting rid of players, and they're whining again about being a mid-market team, whatever that is. When they were selling out, nobody there talked about not making money. They talked about leading the league in attendance. As far as I can tell, from Major League Baseball revenue and ticket sales, and revenue sharing, etc., the Rockies are in the black every year. Even if they aren't, the Monforts have spent maybe $150 million as their part of the ownership group and to buy out other owners, and the franchise is valued at about $800 million.
