Puck Headlines: Have the Wings learned their Game 6 lessons?
By Greg Wyshynski
June 7, 2009
» Reminder: Live Blog of Game 6 tonight with the usual gang of knuckleheads at 7:45 p.m. EST. Should be a show.
» Kevin McGran, live-blogging the hearing in Phoenix, writes that no decision will be made today on the sale and relocation of the Phoenix Coyotes. Bettman's in da hizzy, by the way.
» Mike Babcock has made it clear to his Detroit Red Wings that Mellon Arena was a chamber of horrors for them in Games 3 and 4, and that winning Game 6 in last year's Final was no picnic in the park either. The Wings are going to be focused tonight; our hearts say "Game 7," but our heads are telling us otherwise right now.

NHL's dirty laundry stinks up Stanley Cup final
Damien Cox
June 7, 2009
DETROIT -- It was a much-heralded Stanley Cup final classic, Red Wings against Penguins, played out last night before millions of television viewers on Canada's national broadcast arm and one of the major television networks in the United States.
Perfect.
Well, pretty perfect, if not for all the dirty laundry obscuring the view.
The NHL, it's fair to say, could not have imagined six or eight months ago that its annual spring showcase would find itself being played out beneath the ominous cloud known as the Phoenix Coyotes.

Red Wings sign Zetterberg to 12-year contract
By JIM IRWIN
January 29, 2009
DETROIT (AP) Looking to keep one of hockey's top teams on steady footing, the Detroit Red Wings knew exactly where to start.
The Stanley Cup champions announced Wednesday that they signed Henrik Zetterberg to the longest contract in team history, a 12-year, $73 million deal that could keep the star forward in Hockeytown until 2021.
"Henrik is one of the world's premier players at both ends of the ice," general manager Ken Holland said. "This is a tremendous commitment on the part of the organization as well as by Henrik. ... We are thrilled that a player we drafted and developed will play out his career in Detroit with this lifetime contract."

Laviolette plays the waiting game
By Ken Hamwey
January 28, 2009
Peter Laviolette coached the New York Islanders to a pair of playoff appearances and two years ago led the Carolina Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup title.
Now the 44-year-old native of Franklin spends his days at home in North Carolina waiting for the phone to ring, hoping a National Hockey League franchise is in the market for a head coach.
Laviolette, who played at Franklin High and Westfield State, was fired by the Hurricanes in December with two years left on a five-year contract.
"I'm in a holding pattern," said Laviolette, who in 1999 coached the Providence Bruins to their only American Hockey League crown. "Right now, I'm making up for lost time, spending the days with my family. When a hockey season moves along, usually a half-dozen jobs become available. If a coaching change is in the works somewhere, you usually get a call in advance."

Wilson not sentimental about return to San Jose
By GREG BEACHAMM
December 1, 2008
SAN JOSE, Calif.Ron Wilson has been hired and fired by enough hockey teams to render him immune to any silly, sentimental longings for an old home or a lost opportunity.
Even if Wilson felt the tiniest bit bittersweet about the San Jose Sharks' outstanding start in their first season since his departure, he would never admit it to the likes of Jeremy Roenick or Joe Thornton.
The blustering coach who led the Sharks to almost every major NHL achievement except the Stanley Cup finals returns to San Jose on Tuesday night behind the Toronto Maple Leafs' bench.

Red Berenson: All Business About Hockey
By Robbie Gomez
December 1, 2008
Michigan head hockey coach and Ross BBA and MBA alum, Gordon "Red" Berenson has had more than a few honors to pin to his hat. Having played for 17 seasons in the NHL, Berenson amassed 658 career NHL points in 987 games. Before he captained and led the St. Louis Blues to three straight Stanley Cup Finals, he was a member of the 1965 Stanley Cup Champion Montreal Canadiens. But it is his coaching prowess that makes him famous in the Ann Arbor circles.
Berenson's 600 career victories, all while coaching the Wolverines, put him 8th on the all time NCAA wins list. Ten Frozen Four appearances, two national championships, the honors go on and on. But Red Berenson, who is entering his 25th of coaching Michigan hockey, has meant so much more to the University than just being good at coaching hockey. Recently, I sat down with Coach Berenson and learned that his advocacy for education has deeply affected his personal views on both hockey and life.

NHL: Deliberate blows to head won't be tolerated
By Ansar Khan
November 23, 2008
CALGARY, Alberta -- For a team that has absorbed its share of questionable hits over the years, the Detroit Red Wings welcome the NHL's efforts to crack down on blows to the head.
In a recent memo issued to clubs, NHL senior vice president of operations Colin Campbell stated that the league "will not tolerate blows to the head that are deliberate, avoidable and illegal,'' and promised an increase in suspensions if these type of incidents persist.

Roy returns home to Montreal, watches No. 33 rise
By The Associated Press
November 23, 2008
MONTREAL (AP) Patrick Roy heard cheers again in Montreal, more than a decade after his bitter divorce from the Canadiens.
All the hard feelings were gone Saturday night, when the storied franchise retired the Hall of Fame goalie's famous No. 33.
"Tonight, I am coming home," Roy said to the raucous, sold-out crowd at the Bell Centre, when his number was raised to the rafters before Montreal played Boston.

Busy offseason for the NHL
By Mark Herrmann
September 10, 2008
We're going to consider this a win for the sport: Hockey getting more national attention in August than it had at any time since the outdoor game on Jan. 1. So now we know the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull -- lipstick (At least that's what Sarah Palin said during her acceptance speech).
Seeing a hockey mom on a national ticket capped an eventful summer, one that reinforced this observer's opinion that hockey offseasons might not be as busy as baseball offseasons but they're a close second (perhaps a topic that will come up with Islanders Bill Guerin and Doug Weight when they take batting practice at Shea this afternoon).

Old Stars get younger and remain strong
By Ross McKeon
September 10, 2008
The Dallas Stars were a good hockey team that just got better last season, and they have the potential to continue their upwardly mobile rise this season.
In other words, if all goes well, the Stars are a Stanley Cup contender.
Those are lofty expectations for a franchise that looked on the brink of possibly undergoing an overhaul with the early-season firing of general manager Doug Armstrong in November. Dallas was a .500 team at the time, still too dependent on aging stars, and the franchise was taking a gamble by being the only team in the league to split the GM job between two men, Les Jackson and Brett Hull.
