Sept. 5: Chad Pennington named Jets starting QB.
Sept. 18: Yankees complete sweep of White Sox to open what will prove to be an insurmountable three-game lead in the wild-card race.
Sept. 20: Orioles at Yankees: A-Rod's walkoff grand slam ties Roger Maris for the American League home run record.
Sept. 21: Yankees host Orioles in the final regular-season game at the Stadium.
Sept. 23: Yankees at Toronto: A-Rod's 62nd home run crashes through the glass of the restaurant in centerfield. A-Rod announces he will pay for the damage (estimated at $1.2 million) himself.
Sept. 25: Mets, holding a one-game lead over the Phillies, host Cubs.
Sept. 26: Mets, tied for first place with Phillies, host Marlins.
Sept. 27: Marlins at Mets. Let's just say that Mr. Met is not smiling on Newsday's front page the following day.
Sept. 28: Mets host Marlins in what proves to be the last game ever at Shea Stadium.
Sept. 29: A former Jets linebacker faces his old teammates for the first time.
OCTOBER
Oct. 1: ALDS Game 1: Tigers at Yankees
Oct. 5: ALDS Game 4: Tigers eliminate Yankees. Hank Steinbrenner congratulates Joe Girardi on a job well-done, saying, "It's OK, you can't win 'em all."
Oct, 6: Hell freezes over.
Oct. 12: Vikings' Adrian Peterson rushes for 406 yards, demolishing his own NFL record.
Oct. 19: Eli Manning throws three interceptions and the Giants finish with minus-5 net yards but still win.
Oct. 26: Jets register first win of the season.
Oct. 27: Joe Torre's Dodgers win the World Series.
Oct. 28: Yankees try to rehire Torre and are fined for tampering.
NOVEMBER
Nov. 1: Knicks open NBA season in Washington.
Nov. 2: Isiah threatens major changes.
Nov. 8: New York Marathon
Nov. 26: Pennington named Jets' starting quarterback -- again.
Nov. 29: USC beats Notre Dame, 57-6.
DECEMBER
Dec. 6: Someone most New Yorkers never heard of wins the Heisman.
Dec. 7: BCS selection show: Two teams that most New Yorkers don't care about will play for the national championship. Newsday's Erik Boland rips the BCS and calls for a playoff system.
Dec. 21: Giants clinch a wild-card playoff berth.
Dec. 27: Giants, playing no regular starters, score an impressive 22-3 victory.
Dec. 28: Patriots win their 35th game in a row.
