portugal_world_cup_soccer_0.jpg Portugal coach announces 50 man preliminary squad

May 5, 2010

Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz announced his provisional 50-man World Cup roster today, a squad that included no less than nine Sporting players and six from Benfica.

The most notable inclusions were that of Fabio Coentrao, who has received huge support in his homeland, especially since looking so comfortable in Benfica’s back four, and his club-mate Carlos Martins who looks to have an outside chance of making the final 23.

Queiroz had said he has already decided on around 20 of the 23 slots available in his squad for World Cup 2010, however players such as Coentrao and Zenit St. Petersburg playmaker Danny will be hoping they can bag one of the final spots up for grabs.

Chelsea’s Jose Bosingwa, Roma’s Vitorino Antunes, Valencia’s Manuel Fernandes and West Ham's Luis Boa Morte, all of whom appeared in the Seleccao’s qualifying campaign, have been omitted due to their respective injury problems.
