MIAMI, Fla. —The ultimate underdogs, they ain’t. Not anymore. The Saints are Super Bowl champions now.

Too bad Payton can’t be MVP of Super Bowl

By PAUL NEWBERRY
January 7, 2010

MIAMI, Fla. — Sean Payton put in an MVP-like performance.

From the sideline.

The New Orleans coach made all the right calls in the Super Bowl—even one that didn’t look so good at first, well, it turned out just fine. Thanks in large part to Payton’s bravado, the Saints won the first Super Bowl title in their franchise’s largely dismal history, beating that other Peyton—you know, Manning—and the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 Sunday night.

Debating Manning vs. all-time greats

By Charles Robinson
February 5, 2010

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — One win, and one never-ending argument.

That’s where Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning finds himself heading into Sunday. A victory over the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV would thrust him into rarefied air at his position – amongst such names as Joe Montana, John Elway, Terry Bradshaw and a precious few quarterbacks who have won multiple Super Bowls.

Premature to close the door on Brady

MIAMI, FL — The question we’re supposed to be answering, according to a growing chorus of people in my business, is whether the Indianapolis Colts’ Peyton Manning, pending Sunday’s Super Bowl XLIV performance against the New Orleans Saints, is the greatest quarterback in football history.

By MICHAEL MAROT

INDIANAPOLIS —This is perfect for the Indianapolis Colts: They have Peyton Manning and they’re back in the Super Bowl.

The four-time MVP threw three touchdown passes and the Colts rallied from an 11-point, first-half deficit to beat the New York Jets 30-17 Sunday in the AFC championship game.

Prepare for epic Super Bowl matchup

By Bill Simmons
January 24, 2010

The Saints have never played in the Super Bowl. The Vikings have never won a Super Bowl, but have lost four of them. The Jets won Super Bowl III and haven't been back since. And the Colts? They're only trying to become the first team to finish 19-0. Throw in a New York market, the post-Katrina Saints, and two of the three biggest stars in football (Peyton Manning and Brett Favre), and if your deciding categories were "suffering," "tortured fan bases," "mainstream interest" and "historical significance," you couldn't pick a more fascinating final four.

The 10 biggest NFL draft busts of the decade

By Chris Chase
November 30, 2009

What makes a draft bust? Is draft position alone the determining factor? How much does one have to fail? Could a bust have an otherwise fine career, aside from the massive expectations that accompanied him into the league? What role do injuries play in the whole thing? Does bad luck equal bust?

Ask 100 different people and you'll get 100 different answers, which is why the whole darn discussion is so fun. There are no right answers, hence the following list fraught with contradictions. You'll find complete flops next to guys who could play a decade in the league. The reasoning player X is included might make you say, "well, why not player Y?"

Eagles, Packers’ futures brighter than Giants’

By Charles Robinson
November 20, 2009

With seven weeks left in the NFL’s regular season, it’s time for the annual glance into the crystal ball. Mathematically, we’re looking at a wide-open race for the postseason. But realistically, the 17 teams with a winning record have all but eliminated any dark horses in the playoff race.

This year, elite level quarterbacks will play a major role in how the remainder of the season plays out. Indeed, I think 10 of the 12 playoff teams this season will be represented by a Pro Bowl-level quarterback, and the other two – the Ravens’ Joe Flacco and Packers’ Aaron Rodgers – are having upper-echelon seasons.

Patriots’ defense put Belichick in tough situation

By Jason Cole
November 19, 2009

As the NFL cognoscenti argue the merits of Bill Belichick’s decision to go on fourth-and-2 against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night, most critics have disregarded why Belichick was wise not to trust his own defense.

The New England Patriots’ defense just isn’t very good right now. Passable, workable, improving – pick whatever word you like to describe the unit. But the fact is, particularly when it comes to stopping the Indianapolis Colts and quarterback Peyton Manning, the Patriots defense is a far cry from when it helped win three Super Bowl titles in the first half of this decade.

Risky call puts Belichick in bad company

By Michael Silver

When Bill Belichick made the decision to go for it on fourth-and-2 from his own 28 with 2:08 remaining and a six-point lead over the Colts on Sunday night, the future Hall of Fame coach knew exactly what he was doing.

It was a perfect setup for ego-driven gratification, guaranteed to paint him as an avant garde genius or a misunderstood martyr: Either the Pats would convert the first down and win the game, and Belichick would be heralded as the shrewdest coach in America, or they’d fall short and lose, and he’d be pummeled by lesser mortals like me who simply don’t understand football on a higher plane.

Greg Cote: In NFL, interim coach honeymoon rarely lasts

By GREG COTE
November 19, 2009

Worked out pretty well the previous time the Buffalo Bills fired coaches in the midst of a season. It was 1986, and they dumped Hank Bullough for some guy named Marv Levy, who stayed 12 years and put up so many of the AFC roadblocks that kept Don Shula and Dan Marino from getting back to a Super Bowl.

More recently, though, in-season coach changes -- such as Buffalo dumping Dick Jauron this week for interim guy Perry Fewell -- rarely work instant or lasting magic.

On Nov. 1, Brett Favre will return to Green Bay for his first away game against the Packers, and the mayor of Green Bay is looking for a way to welcome him. He's asking fans to send in ideas, and he'll pick his favorite four on Oct. 28.

One gentleman has already suggested making the world's largest waffle in the shape of a "4." I like that idea, and I humbly offer seven of my own below. The mayor has asked that the ideas be "respectful" and "tasteful," but I think some of these might fall short of that. Sorry, mayor.

At this point, it’s not worth repeating the quotes because they don’t appear to be accurate. In fact, they may simply be fabricated.

By Bob Sansevere

Odom, Bengals D off to good start

By Jason Cole

The last time Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Antwan Odom made his opponents look like grade-schoolers, he was actually there himself. Odom’s five-sack performance against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday was the most he had in a game since he was a junior at Alma Bryant High in Alabama.

So in the process of rolling up a handful in a 31-24 win over the Packers, Odom didn’t just surprise himself. He continued to provide a non-verbal rebuttal to critics who said he wouldn’t live up to the five-year, $29.5 million contract he signed in 2008.

Brees proving to be the unstoppable force of '09

By Clifton Brown
September 20, 2009

PHILADELPHIA — Drew Brees is on a pace to throw 72 touchdown passes this season.

That tells you how potent the Saints' offense is. They steamrolled the Eagles, 48-22, as Brees (25-for-34, 311 yards, three touchdowns, one interception) made the Eagles look like they were playing with only 10 defenders.

"Drew Brees is an animal," Eagles cornerback Joselio Hanson said. "We couldn't stop them once they got down in our end."

Questions remain about the Saints' defense, but offensively they have all the pieces. They have a great quarterback, he has a ton of playmakers, the running game is improved and coach Sean Payton is an innovative play-caller. Brees sensed during preseason that this could be a special year for the Saints, similar to 2006, when they reached the NFC championship game.

Vikings are 2-0 but still looking half bad — Minnesota rolls through Detroit after another sluggish start

By Sean Jensen
September 20, 2009

DETROIT — The excitement in the Vikings' locker room Sunday after a 27-13 victory over the Detroit Lions at Ford Field was palpable and justifiable.

The Vikings, winners of 14 of the past 15 games in this series, earned the season sweep against the winless Lions last season by a mere six points.

So after a two-touchdown win, securing the second 2-0 start in the Brad Childress era, players could make light of regrouping and rallying after lethargic starts in both games.

"If the end result is us coming up with a W," Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield said, "we can start slow the whole year."

Daytona solves conflict with 2010 Super Bowl

Yes, NASCAR, there is a Super Bowl - other than the Super Bowl of stock car racing.
Daytona International Speedway found a creative way to deal with a scheduling conflict between qualifying for the 2010 Daytona 500 and the February 7, 2010 NFL Super Bowl in Miami.

The answer? Move the pole qualifying session from its traditional Sunday slot to a day earlier. In doing so, Daytona created a racing tripleheader for Saturday, February 6, featuring the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 ARCA race, Daytona 500 qualifying and the non-points Budweiser Shootout for the Sprint Cup Series. The qualifying session, scheduled for 1.05 pm [local time], will kick off the day's activities.

Refreshing scenarios heading into camp

The man who led the NFL in tackles last season is underappreciated, undersized and, in a relative sense, grossly underpaid.

So what does Cleveland Browns inside linebacker D’Qwell Jackson plan to do in response?

“We’ve got a new group of coaches, and they’ve identified a few players they might want to build around – so what I have to do is go out and prove I’m worthy of a new contract,” Jackson said in a recent phone conversation. “I’m not making a lot of noise, and I don’t want to stress out and worry about things I can’t control. All I can do is work my tail off and play as hard as I can, and if I get a new deal I’ll be the happiest guy on this earth.”

Haynesworth talks in great detail about all the work he has put into the home, such as the 27 trees he had taken out of the backyard to make way for the pool and pool house. Adjoining the pool is a waterfall Haynesworth had redone three times before the contractor got it right.

“I wanted it a certain way, I even gave the guy a picture of what I wanted and he kept coming back with these other designs,” said Haynesworth, a hint of annoyance still evident in his voice.

Everywhere one looks around team headquarters at One Buccaneer Place, the faces have changed, from general manager Mark Dominik to head coach Raheem Morris to quarterback Byron Leftwich to running back Derrick Ward. Dominik and Morris, who replaced Jon Gruden, jettisoned several veterans including 14-year linebacker (and 11-time Pro Bowler) Derrick Brooks, venerable running back Warrick Dunn, receiver Joey Galloway and quarterback Jeff Garcia.

CBS Pushes NFL to Stream Super Bowl 2010 Online

Ian Paul, PC World
June 7, 2009

CBS wants to offer a live online video stream of next year's Super Bowl XLIV from Miami and the NFL just might say yes. This isn't your usual tech rumor, either; the announcement that CBS, the official broadcaster for Super Bowl XLIV, wants to stream the mega-popular sporting event comes from CBS Interactive President Quincy Smith, according to Business Week. In the same report, Brian Rolapp, the NFL's senior vice-president for media strategy, says the NFL "would be open" to CBS' proposal. That's not a firm guarantee, but with two named sources from CBS and the NFL openly discussing the idea, Super Bowl streaming may be just around the corner even if we don't see it in 2010.

The possibility of the Super Bowl hitting the Web comes on the heels of recent successes for CBS and its online sports programming. During its television broadcasts of NCAA basketball's March Madness 2009, CBS hauled in millions of dollars from big-ticket advertisers. Even more shocking is the claim that the network managed a modest, ad-supported profit from its online streaming of the college tournament (in 2008 for the first time; this year the stream also went to the iPhone).

Childress puts deadline on Favre decision

By Gregg Rosenthal
June 8, 2009

Brett Favre doesn't seem to be in a hurry to make a decision about his NFL future. If he was, he probably would have undergone arthroscopic shoulder surgery earlier than late May to ready himself for the 2009 season.

The Vikings, however, suddenly seem to be getting antsy.  ESPN.com reported Monday that Vikings coach Brad Childress has set a deadline of this week for Favre to decide whether he's going to play in Minnesota.

Why the rush now?  If Childress is trying to show who's boss, he's picking a strange time for it.

The Vikings are winding down their pre-training camp practices this week.  Very little will happen as a team between now and late July, so it makes sense for the Vikings and Favre in the health of his shoulder before getting hitched.

Ravens officials at work on 2009 team
A quest for new blood in several positions

By Mike Preston
February 14, 2009

It appears the Ravens are close, possibly one player away, from a Super Bowl after a strong 2008 season that included reaching the AFC championship game. But appearances can be deceiving.

The Ravens, though, are smart enough to realize it.

"We're not content," said Eric DeCosta, the director of pro personnel. "We do have holes. We're not one player away. That was obvious in the Pittsburgh game [the AFC championship].

"We have a lot of question marks, but we have good leadership and we already have a good plan in place."

The Ravens need new blood, and that can come only via the draft. You could see age and injuries take their toll on veterans such as wide receiver Derrick Mason, tight end Todd Heap, cornerbacks Samari Rolle and Chris McAlister, offensive tackle Willie Anderson and even linebacker Ray Lewis. The Ravens paced Lewis through practices, and he wasn't as effective in the last month of the season as he was in the first half.
