Georgia closes in on SEC title

ATHENS, GA — After a dominating victory over Auburn, No. 13 Georgia merely needs to beat lowly Kentucky next Saturday to wrap up the Southeastern Conference East. That would send the Bulldogs into a likely matchup against No. 1 LSU for the league championship on Dec. 3 in Atlanta, a scenario that would’ve seemed beyond farfetched back in early September.

Joe Paterno must go. Now!

By Andy Staples

A guide:

Words in standard type are the thoughts of a person attempting to evaluate every side of the story involving Penn State coach Joe Paterno's role in the case involving former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

Words in italics are the thoughts of a father of two young children, who, like most parents, read the news of what allegedly took place at Penn State and wondered "What if this had happened to one of my kids?"

TUCSON, AZ — Tim Kish has had a simple message for his players since taking over for Mike Stoops: Have fun.

The Wildcats did just that with an emotional win, giving their interim coach a victory in his first game while sending UCLA's coach possibly closer to losing his job.

Dusting off an aggressive defensive scheme and relying on a recharged running game to complement Nick Foles' passing, Arizona ran over the Bruins 48-12 Thursday night in Kish's debut.

Roles are reversed for Georgia, Boise State

By George Schroeder
September 2, 2011

ATLANTA, GA — Each day that August, their warmups were accompanied by the sweet sounds of Ray Charles. They heard the song so many times, they grew sick of it. And looking back, Jared Zabransky has no doubt that was part of the problem. The Boise State Broncos certainly had Georgia on their minds. And eventually, in their heads.

This, back in 2005, was Boise State's shot at the big-time. The upstart Broncos, in just their 10th season at the FBS level, had lost only one game the previous year, in the Liberty Bowl to Louisville. A season opener against the Bulldogs in Athens, Ga., was a chance for the fledgling program to shake things up, make a statement. That was the plan, anyway.

10 reasons to embrace college football after a year of scandal

By Stewart Mandel and Andy Staples, SI.com

The first eight months of 2011 have not been pleasant for college football enthusiasts. One of the sport's most accomplished coaches resigned in disgrace. One of the four most prestigious bowl games was embroiled in corporate fraud. NCAA investigations hovered over both schools that participated in last season's BCS championship game and a host of other high-profile programs. At conference media days, commissioners' speeches about full-cost scholarships and stiffer sanctions drowned out the usual anticipatory chatter about the upcoming season.

Boise State, Notre Dame headline spring football preview

By Cory McCartney
March 16, 2011

As spring practice begins on non-AQ campuses from Annapolis to Honolulu, there's no shortage of burning questions to answer before the calendar turns.

But before we start diving into some of those pressing issues, a plea: Can we put the David vs. Goliath talk to rest? It makes for great television when Brent Musburger says TCU won one "for the little guys everywhere" by beating Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl, but a team from outside the six power conferences has won a BCS game in five of the last seven years. It may have been a Cinderella story when Utah beat Pitt in the 2005 Fiesta Bowl or when Boise State dropped Oklahoma two years later, but the fairytale effect has worn off. These teams have proven they belong.
