By Bernie Wilson, AP
December 31, 2010

San Diego, CA — Jake Locker can head off to the NFL now, having secured a win for the Washington Huskies in his last college game.

Locker bounced back from an injury he said looked worse than it was, scoring on a 25-yard run in the third quarter to help Washington to a 19-7 victory over punchless No. 17 Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl on Thursday night.

NCAA Football: North Carolina downs Tennessee 30-27

By The Associated Press
December 31, 2010

Nashville, TN — For North Carolina, the crazy finish to the Music City Bowl was just another twist in a trying season that ended on a high note.

Tennessee had a much different viewpoint, and an all-too-familiar feeling.

Casey Barth kicked a 23-yard field goal in the second overtime to send North Carolina past Tennessee 30-27 in a game that will be remembered much more for the crazy finish of regulation than how it ended Thursday night.

Plus-one system the answer for college football

By M. Huguenin
December 27, 2010

We're five days away from Jan. 1, and most college football fans greet that news with a huge collective yawn.

New Year's Day used to be Christmas Day for college football fans. Now, the unintended consequence of the BCS is that every game but the national title game doesn't matter. In other words, the folks who are telling you that every single game matters in the regular season essentially are rendering meaningless any postseason game other than the title game.

Texas Longhorns look to get out of mud hole

By Olin Buchanan

Austin, TX — The power of positive thinking was never lost on Darrel Royal.

"You've got to think lucky," Royal, the legendary former Texas coach, once said. "If you fall into a mud hole, check your back pocket -- you might have caught a fish."

Well, current Texas coach Mack Brown, who invokes Royal's name at most every opportunity, should be reaching back on a daily basis because the Longhorns have fallen into a giant mud hole.

Auburn - Oregon BCS Championship game tops annual bowl rankings

By Stewart Mandel
December 7, 2010

Several times over the past few days, I've seen it written that college football has the best regular season in sports and the worst postseason in sports. Agreed on the former; disagreed on the latter.

No question, college football has the most clunky, illogical and head-scratching postseason in sports. But to call it the "worst" implies people don't enjoy it. They do. Lots of them. You included.

Jim Harbaugh turned Stanford football into a winner

By Ann Killion

What's the most remarkable thing about this college football season? Not Oregon's minuscule time between plays. Not the size of the loophole the NCAA opened in its embarrassing decision on Cam Newton.

No, the most remarkable thing about this college football season is Stanford. A team that was 1-11 in 2006, at a school considered unfriendly and untenable in the world of big-time college football, is now 11-1 and ranked fourth in the country.

TCU’s Big East move a winner

By Dan Wetzel
November 29, 2010

Fort Worth, TX — Fort Worth, Texas, isn’t in the East, which makes TCU’s entry Monday into the Big East (effective for the 2012 season) sound clunky. Fort Worth isn’t in the West either. And it is home to no mountains. So its previous membership as the only Central time zone school in the Mountain West Conference didn’t make sense either.

In pragmatic terms TCU to the Big East is a win-win.

By Stewart Mandel

Fresno State (6-3) at No. 3 Boise State (9-0)

The Bulldogs are coming off a heartbreaking 35-34 home loss to Nevada and must now go on the road six nights later to face another ranked foe. And while coach Chris Petersen would never say it, Boise knows what could be at stake in a couple of weeks and that every style point helps. Ranking NCAA football: Rivals.com 120 at 1:20

By Mike Huguenin
November 9, 2010

Here is the sixth Rivals.com 1-120 ranking of the season.

How do we come up with the rankings? Well, we wait until after Week 5 to release our first set. And there are numerous variables at play, chief among them who a team has beaten and where. While we have a "what have you done for me lately?" mindset, we also consider the rankings a snapshot of the whole season, not just one game; that's why -- at times -- teams are ranked below a team they may have beaten. In addition, if a tiebreaker is needed, it's who we think would win on a neutral field.

On to the rankings:

Everyone with stake in realignment won, except the fans

By Stewart Mandel
June 15, 2010

Austin, TX — For those of us who appreciate college football for such quaint things as rivalries, road trips, intersectional games and plain old-fashioned tradition, this should probably be a day of celebration. Order has been restored. The Big 12 has (mostly) survived. The Pac 10 and Big Ten (if it stays put) managed to expand without losing their core cultures. The sport as we know it will carry on after all.
