Kyle Singler scored 19 points and Brian Zoubek rebounded Gordon Hayward’s miss with 3.6 seconds left Monday night to help Duke beat Butler 61-59, ending the tiny underdog’s try for a “Hoosiers” sequel one win short of the Hollywood ending.

College Basketball: Scouting the Final Four

April 1, 2010

WEST VIRGINIA

“They have so much length on defense — Da’Sean Butler is 6-foot-7, Kevin Jones is 6-8, Wellington Smith is 6-8, and Devin Ebanks is 6-9 — that when you combine that with their pressure mentality in the man-to-man, they’re able to push your offense a lot further away from the basket than normal. … The 1-3-1 they employed in the Kentucky game has been a great change-up for them, and they’ve gone to it a lot more this year.

Last year's record: 28-4, 15-3 Big East

2009-10's toughest games: Duke (59-68), Kentucky, Texas, Syracuse

Primary attraction: After losing prodigal Hasheem Thabeet to the NBA, does Calhoun's team have enough to win back a weaker Big East?

Three items of undeniable interest:

1.        Jim Calhoun fights on. No, Jim Calhoun isn't leaving, and he isn't taking the hint. Last year's season included 28 wins, proving Calhoun can still get the job done at age 67; it also included the beginning of an investigation into illicit recruiting methods and another batch of health issues, which Calhoun has been battling for years.

2009-10's toughest games: at Kentucky, at Texas, Michigan State (89-82 win), at Duke

Primary attraction: After his second national title, Roy Williams has a brand new team. Fortunately, that team is already really good.

Three items of undeniable interest:

1.        Turnover: Not just an overlooked dessert anymore. Here's an easy way to tell your program is firing on all cylinders: You roll to a national title. Then, all of your best players, including four starters, leave. The next season, you are not only still ranked, you're ranked among the top five teams in the country playing with players that didn't see more than tangential roles in last season's national title.

November 12, 2009

The Washington Huskies come off one of their most successful seasons in school history as they accumulated 26 wins and won their first Pac-10 title in almost 60 years. Although the Huskies lost a couple key players from last year’s squad, they are loaded with young talent and capable of defending the conference crown. Head coach Lorenzo Romar has done an outstanding job recruiting top flight players to UW. One weakness for this team could be how effective they will be cleaning the glass with the departure of All Pac-10 F Jon Brockman.  Looking at the latest NCAA basketball betting lines the Huskies are listed at +4500 odds to win the National Championship.

Hokies know NCAA quest starts with defense

By Steve Megargee
November 12, 2009

After receiving disappointing news on Selection Sunday each of the past two seasons, Virginia Tech is feeling a little defensive.

The Hokies' inability to stop opposing offenses last season eventually halted their drive to the NCAA tournament. They're counting on a change in philosophy to alter their postseason destination. Virginia Tech opens the season Sunday against Brown.

"Last year we just tried to outscore people," junior guard Malcolm Delaney said. "I know the attitude of last year's team wasn't to stop people."

Bob Knight places a very special phone call

By Eamonn Brennan
November 1, 2009

This seemed a bit of a formality, given the fact that Bob Knight told IU to take that lawsuit-settling alumni money and shove it, but I suppose formalities have to be handled formally. And so it is that Bob Knight officially called IU athletic director Fred Glass yesterday and told him he would not be attending an IU Hall of Fame induction ceremony in his honor in November. Ouch:

--

Glass said Knight said he was concerned the media interest in his attendance would take away from others being inducted. Along with Knight, Steve Downing, Katrin Koch, Joe Norman, Mike Rabold, Alan Somers and Jerry Yeagley are also entering the Hall of Fame.

Iowa basketball: Thirty years later, Final Four team still family

By RICK BROWN
November 1, 2009

Iowa City, Ia. — They were tough-minded and tight, the true definition of team.

They were one of the last, if not the last, teams to get an at-large berth into the 1980 NCAA basketball tournament. And they wrote their legacy in a Final Four season that didn't sink under wave after wave of injuries and a near-tragic plane crash.

"They were all tuned into team,'' said their coach, Lute Olson.

That Iowa team returned to campus over the weekend to celebrate the 30th anniversary of a Final Four season.

Western Kentucky losing underdog label

By Steve Megargee

Advancing beyond the first round of the last two NCAA tournaments hasn't stopped Western Kentucky from getting overshadowed in its home state.

Kentucky has garnered more offseason attention than any program in the country since John Calipari arrived from Memphis and signed the nation's top-ranked recruiting class. The off-court drama surrounding Louisville coach Rick Pitino has emerged as the summer's biggest soap opera.

Happy 99th Birthday, Coach Wooden

By Eamonn Brennan
October 15, 2009

In case you hadn't already heard, today is John Wooden's 99th birthday. YOU SAY IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY! WELL IT'S MY BIRTHDAY TOO YEAH! Note: It's not really my birthday. The lyrics of the song required some light fibbing. What, like it was Paul McCartney's birthday every time he ever sung that song? Please. And now I'm getting sidetracked: The point here is that today John Wooden can celebrate another milestone in a life full of them, the culmination of 99 whole years spent on this little round orb we call Earth. Not too shabby, huh?

Programs on the Rise: Arizona heading back to roaring '90s

Lute Olson announced he was taking an indefinite leave of absence in November 2007.

Arizona spent the subsequent 17 months unsettled.

The Wildcats played one season under Kevin O'Neil, the next under Russ Pennell. And though both men snuck into the NCAA tournament (as a No. 10 seed in 2008 and No. 12 seed in 2009), neither team looked nor felt nor played like the Arizona program that rose to prominence under Olson, all of which put a tremendous amount of pressure on athletic director Jim Livengood.

Rebounds are biggest concern for Capel's Sooners

By Mike DeCourcy
September 29, 2009

Rebounds still are going to fall from the backboards when the Oklahoma Sooners play this winter. It's an inevitable part of the game. No one, not even 1985 Villanova playing nearly flawless basketball, makes every shot. When Jeff Capel ponders the season ahead, this is what he wonders most: Who will pick up the balls that miss?

After producing Oklahoma's greatest basketball success since the 1980s, Capel must replace three starters and the most productive reserve from last season's 30-6 team. Player of the year Blake Griffin averaged 22.7 points and led OU in scoring in 29 of its 37 games and left to become the first pick in the NBA draft.

Coaching was just in the cards for Bennett

The only problem was convincing Bennett.

"I think I swore to many people the last thing I'd ever want to do is coach," said Bennett, the son of longtime Wisconsin-Green Bay and Wisconsin coach Dick Bennett. "I watched my dad growing up. NCAA Basketball: Week 4 Recap — Will college football learn its lesson?

By Raphielle Johnson
September 28, 2009

The talk all week was all about how some once-proud programs were "back": Florida State, Miami and Washington. They all had great victories last weekend, but in the excitement over these wins many ignored the fact that there was a lot of football to be played. Not that any of those three took part in the excessive praise but Saturday marked a day in which all learned just how far they still had to go. Florida State kicked things off with a 17-7 loss to USF, a team hoping to at some point crack the "Big Three" within the state of Florida.

Redshirt freshman QB B.J. Daniels, a native of Tallahassee, didn't have the best game in regards to accuracy (8-for-21 passing) but he did account for more than 350 yards of offense and two passing touchdowns on the day. But he wasn't the most troubling aspect of the loss for the Seminoles despite their not recruiting him out of high school.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The regional system that drives NCAA Division II basketball is the prime push behind the schedules the University of Charleston will play in 2009-10.

Then, there's the Golden Eagle men's visit to Morgantown for a Dec. 5 date with West Virginia. The UC women play 26 of their 27 regular-season games against Atlantic Regional foes.

The West Virginia Conference schedules expand to 22 games (up from 20) this season, too.

Those are the highlights of the UC men's and women's schedules.

Landing NCAA basketball tournament games at Intrust Bank Arena would mean millions to the Wichita economy.

Not just for the week in March when the Madness would bring between $5 million and $10 million and 10,000 to 12,000 visitors to the city.

But millions for years, with the increased visibility and credibility that a successful basketball tournament would bring to the arena, experts say.

Wichita State University, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission and SMG, the arena's manager, have submitted bids to host the first two rounds of the men's tournament in 2011, 2012 or 2013. A women's tournament bid is being readied this month.

Jones wouldn't be bothered at all, though, if you should come to regard him as an extraordinary basketball player.

And when you see him, you will. He'll almost certainly be in the McDonald's All-American Game, and if you miss that, you can watch him starting in November 2010 for the Baylor Bears, a college he chose as a freshman in high school.

Former UCLA basketball player sues NCAA

"While the NCAA, its member conferences and schools, and its for-profit business partners reap millions of dollars from revenue streams ..., former student athletes whose likenesses are utilized to generate those profit centers receive no compensation whatsoever," the suit claims.

Early enrollment has its privileges

National signing day, once just a deadline but now its own festival, falls this week as it always does, the first Wednesday in February.

High school athletes make official their college destinations. Alumni make official their pride. Coast to coast, coaches gloat. Moms serve cake. Then everyone goes home.

Or so they did. But, while that scene plays out in countless high school cafeterias, more than 100 erstwhile high school seniors across the nation will be completing their first month of college. For half a year before the new recruiting classes hit campus, they will have had a valuable head start in memorizing playbooks and impressing new coaches. In a fast-growing trend —- one with distinct Georgia roots —- early enrollment has become the next big thing in college football, encouraging prep players, whether they are socially equipped for college or not, to put away their childish things for the sake of old State U.

Kerri Hanks came back to Notre Dame and is focused on bringing a title to South Bend.

By Graham.Hays
Septermber 4, 2008

The daughter of Gary Hanks, a former semipro footballer in England who moved to Texas before she was born, Hanks is the most prolific offensive player in the college game today. She won the Hermann Trophy as a sophomore in 2006 -- the only sophomore, male or female, ever to win college soccer's most prestigious individual award -- and joined former North Carolina legend Mia Hamm as the only two players to lead the nation in both goals and assists for a season. With nearly a full season left to play, she needs one more assist to become the sixth women's player in NCAA history to total 60 goals and 60 assists during a career; barring injury, she should become just the third to reach 70 and 70.

She's fast, but there are faster forwards. She's strong and possesses a powerful shot, but there are stronger strikers. She's nimble with the ball but not noticeably more so than some other elite technicians. Where Hanks stands alone is in her ability to harness all of those myriad physical abilities within a tactician's mindset.

Basketball Getting Dunked in Las Vegas Cesspool: John Helyar

By John Helyar
July 31, 2008

Last week in Las Vegas, most of America's top teen basketball players made their last drives to the hoop and their last dives into the cesspool that is their summer circuit.

About 60 percent of the 250 top-ranked prep hoopsters played in one of three tournaments in Las Vegas, capping a two- month swirl of camps and tourneys at a wholly appropriate site.

This circuit is really run n' gun roulette -- each kid trying to display the kind of flashy game that can land a young baller on a winning number: a lush future National Basketball Association contract and a signature shoe line. Their futures are in the hands of power brokers in the stands -- some legit (college coaches and NBA scouts) and many as smarmy (agents and their so-called runners) as the seedier side of the Strip.

MBK: Jarvis Signs On To Coach Florida Atlantic

May 27, 2008
By TIM REYNOLDS, AP Sports Writer

BOCA RATON, Fla.(AP) Mike Jarvis found a home in Boca Raton four years ago. Now, he's got a job to with it.

Jarvis was introduced Tuesday as the men's basketball coach at Florida Atlantic, returning to run a program for the first time since St. John's fired him six games into the 2003-04 season.

University trustees still must formally approve the hiring, a process that now seems little more than a formality. Jarvis' four-year deal almost certainly will become official Wednesday.

The 2008-09 transfer class doesn’t appear to have anyone who will make the kind of impact players such as Devan Downey, Tyler Smith and Robert Vaden made this past season.

The Screening Process
Steroids In America: a guide to testing policies, from pros to high school

By Joe Lemire, SI.com
March 11, 2008

Two weeks ago members of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce told league commissioners that they were mulling legislation that would mandate a universal antidoping policy for every professional sports league in the U.S. But until such a law is enacted (if it ever is), leagues are free to test at their discretion. While each sport prohibits a similar list of -performance-enhancing- drugs, such as steroids and stimulants, there is great variety in the scope and frequency of testing.

Offence the best offence, according to coach

By: Dave Feschuk
March 12, 2008

Fifteen-some years ago, David Arsenault was a basketball coach with a defence-first, no-nonsense growl. He was a Bobby Knight wannabe toiling in NCAA Division 3. His only problem was that Knight's give-'em-hell textbook wasn't working at Grinnell College, a small, academically centred school located in what Arsenault describes as "a cornfield in Iowa."

As if recruiting players wasn't difficult enough – "If you're academically gifted and athletic, why would you come to a corn field?" the coach still wonders – keeping his recruits on his team turned out to be even trickier. Players, perhaps too smart to tolerate being berated and benched, quit with regularity. Losses mounted.

MORROW, GA- Elizabeth City State University junior Anthony Hilliard and Wingate University senior Sean Barnette will share the honor as South Atlantic Region 2008 "Player of the Year".

This past season Anthony Hilliard was named CIAA Player of the Year after leading the Vikings to their first 20 win season since 1999. He led the conference in both scoring and rebounding and for the second season was the only men's basketball player to average a double-double in the CIAA. He scored his 1,000 career point in 07-08 and is the first Viking since 1993 (Nate Higgs) and the sixth overall to be named CIAA Player of the Year.

Best Conference in College Basketball

February 12, 2008, 2:02 PM

With March Madness a month away, I wanted to break down the best conference in college basketball.  This, in many ways is how a team is judged, ranked and looked at come tournament time.  The way I see it, there are five power conferences in which to choose from...sorry Memphis conference USA isn't one of them.  So let's break them down!

In alphabetical order we have the ACC, the Big 12, the Big East, the Big 10, the PAC 10 and the SEC.  Out of these many can make the argument that the last two national title teams have come out of the SEC, Florida winning the last two.  Also, many can make the argument that two of the top three teams in the country are in the ACC, Duke and UNC.  Many can argue that the Big 12 is it, Kansas was one of the last teams to lose a game, the conference has, who many feel, the national player of the year in Michael Beasley and Kansas State...who gave Kansas their first loss.  Others contend it's the Big 10 with teams like Purdue, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan State.  All good points, but my vote is for the Big East.

Odom announces retirement

Columbia, SC (Sports Network) - South Carolina men's head basketball coach Dave Odom announced Friday he is set to retire at the end of the season.

The 65-year-old coach, who signed a two-year extension through the 2009-10 campaign last year, is in the midst of his seventh season at South Carolina. The Gamecocks are 9-8 (1-2 SEC) this season.

"Everything has a beginning and an end," said Odom. "It's a hard decision because this profession and this game are all about passion and I can tell you the passion is still there, but I recognize the signs and I recognize the thoughts that brought me to this decision

Herb Pope to make much-anticipated debut

By Andy Katz, ESPN.com

If you think this season's freshmen class is deep, just wait until Saturday.

After traversing one of the more checkered paths to get on the floor in recent history, one more stellar freshman will make his debut Saturday.

Finally, New Mexico State freshman forward Herb Pope will play for the Aggies against Louisiana Tech (ESPN Full Court, 9 p.m. ET), ending what has been a drawn-out courtship for Pope to NMSU that hit a slew of speed bumps along the way.

"I'm just overwhelmed with joy," Pope said by phone from Las Cruces. "It's going to be a very emotional day for me to finally get a start on my college career.

The best man for this job is a woman
Having conquered college basketball, Candace Parker is ready for a new challenge: saving the WNBA. Probably with the Sparks.

December 16, 2007

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Jump shot, fadeaway, soft touch? Got it.

Behind the back, between the legs, to the hoop? Got it.

Spin moves, step-backs, rebounds and soaring dunks? Got 'em all, and more.

She is the most dominant player in college basketball. Yes, you read right -- she. As in Candace Parker, 21 years old, a 6-foot-4 athlete so superbly multidimensional that she is listed as a forward/center/guard for the University of Tennessee Lady Vols.

Written by Robert Johnson
Wednesday, 12 December 2007

Two teams that have an extreme dislike for each other meet on Wednesday as Xavier hosts Cincinnati in a cross-town college basketball rivalry. Xavier is ranked #17 in the country and has not lost at home in nearly a year. The Musketeers trail the all-time series 47-27 but they have won 7 of the past 11 games between the two teams. SBG Global reports that early NCAA Basketball betting has the public taking Xavier at Home.

College Basketball Betting Preview
Cincinnati (4-4) at Xavier (7-1)
Wednesday, 7:00 pm Eastern – ESPN 2
SBG Global Opening Line: Xavier -19.5 , Total TBA

Neither team was ranked last season when the two teams met. Cincinnati won 67-57 last season and the game was the highlight of the season for the Bearcats. They finished 11-19 on the season, their worst finish in 23 years while Xavier finished 25-9. Cincinnati and Xavier have played at least once every year since 1945-46. Cincinnati has lost its last two trips to Cintas Center. Xavier has won 13 straight at home and has not lost since last December on their home court
