By The Associated Press
December 31, 2011

HOUSTON — Kevin Martin scored 27 points and the Houston Rockets looked energized from the start Saturday, despite playing their third game in three nights.

But if any of them were feeling tired in the fourth quarter, Lowry provided an emotional jolt, chasing down Jannero Pargo and swatting away his layup attempt near the 10-minute mark of a 95-84 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Distrust and overseas market weighs heavily in NBA labor talks

By Ian Thomsen
July 30, 2011

NEW YORK — What are the owners and players going to say to one another when labor negotiations resume Monday in New York?

Neither side is likely to be in the mood to compromise. If action is to take place to save 2011-12, it probably won't happen until late September when there's no time left for posturing and their hands are forced to make a deal or face a truncated or canceled season.

Defending Nowitzki takes collective effort

By Marc J. Spears

MIAMI – How do you defend Dirk Nowitzki?

First, you must force him to his right. Once he starts his dribble from the perimeter, it’s also best to bring a double-team in hopes of making him pass. Oh, and don’t allow him to use his signature step-back to his left … or his spin move to the right … or his post-up deep on the baseline.

In other words: Good luck.

The Cavaliers did it. They banded together, played like an actual NBA team, and defeated LeBron James and his Miami Heat. It was an unlikely victory, to say the least, but offered a sweet satisfaction. By Britt Robson
March 22, 2011

The hallmark of a well-run franchise is putting players in a position where they are best able to succeed. In that sense, general manager Sam Presti's moves in building the Thunder have been remarkably prescient, patient and well-planned.

Presti got lucky when Kevin Durant fell to him as the no-brainer No. 2 pick in the 2007 draft. But his picks since then, including Russell Westbrook in 2008 and both James Harden and Serge Ibaka in 2009, were either surprising or questioned at the time. Now they seem like wise components of a comprehensive plan.

Philadelphia, PA — After Philadelphia’s 89-86 win over Boston on Friday — the fifth straight game between the two teams decided by four points or fewer — reporters asked Celtics coach Doc Rivers whether the Sixers are the sort of low playoff seed whom elite teams fear playing in the first round. The question made sense because Philadelphia is 31-19 over its last 50 games and looks to be in an entirely different league from whichever team wins the sad “race” for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. But Rivers wouldn’t bite, according to Chris Forsberg of ESPN Boston:

Spurs still No. 1 as race for final playoff spots heats up

By Britt Robson
Februry 8, 2011

With about two weeks left before the Feb. 24 trading deadline, the competition for the bottom playoff spots has intensified in both conferences.

The deadline and the postseason chase are linked because teams with no shot at the playoffs are more likely to begin positioning themselves for the future, while teams still in the hunt are apt to hang on to talent they otherwise would consider dealing -- like, say, Andre Iguodala in Philadelphia, Stephen Jackson in Charlotte or even Steve Nash in Phoenix.
