MIAMI BEACH, FL — Austin and Ty Dillon strolled into the lobby of the Loews Miami Beach Hotel at 1 a.m. Monday, but they might as well have been floating on a cloud.

Carrying Austin Dillon's Camping World Truck Series champion's trophy -- which had just been put on display at a midnight photo shoot at Homestead-Miami Speedway with fellow champions Tony Stewart, who won the Sprint Cup title that night, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who claimed the Nationwide crown on Saturday -- had everything to do with that.

Favorites emerging in 2011 Chase

By Jay Hart
October 4, 2011

And now we have a new “it” driver of the week. Check that, drivers.

Just 19 points separate Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards in first and Jeff Gordon in ninth. This is the result of NASCAR’s new, incrementally smaller points system. For now, anyway.

Kurt Busch, ninth after last week’s race, is now third thanks to Sunday’s win at Dover. Two wins were enough to propel Tony Stewart from last to first, but a 25th at Dover knocked him back to third. And Jimmie Johnson, he’s not done. One second-place finish vaulted him from 10th to fifth, just 13 points back with seven races still to go.

NASCAR set for important test at repaved Daytona

By Paul Newberry
January 19, 2011

Atlanta, GA — Jamie McMurray likes the idea of switching to a new points system to determine the NASCAR champion.

Specifically, one he actually understands.

"The points system we have right now is really confusing," McMurray said Wednesday during a promotional stop in downtown Atlanta, where he posed with the 2011 version of the trophy he won at last year's Daytona 500. "And not just for the average fan who watches the race. Everyone in our sport is confused by the way our points system is right now."

By Paul Newberry, AP
April 17, 2011

Talladega, AL — Jimmie Johnson won the race.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. got the checkered flag.

Maybe they should go in the NASCAR record books as co-winners.

In a finish that matched the closest in Sprint Cup history, Johnson edged Clint Bowyer by about a foot to win a Talladega two-step Sunday - a victory that wouldn't have been possible without a big push from Earnhardt.
