Holland tops Pujols, Cardinals; Rangers tie Series at 2
By The Associated Press
October 24, 2011
ARLINGTON, TX Inning by inning, this World Series is getting more intriguing.
Derek Holland provided the latest twist, boosted by a pregame pep talk from his manager. The Texas lefty shut down the St. Louis Cardinals on two hits into the ninth inning, and the Rangers won 4-0 Sunday to even things at 2-all.
A day after Albert Pujols set a team record by scoring 16 runs in a postseason game, they never got close against Holland.

Cardinals win World Series opener, 3-2
Ben Walker, AP
October 20, 2011
ST. LOUIS Texas manager Ron Washington joked about not being able to match wits with Tony La Russa.
No joke.
Who can, these days?
The St. Louis boss looked like a genius once again in Game 1, especially when Allen Craig pinch-hit for ace Chris Carpenter and delivered a go-ahead single that sent the Cardinals past the Texas Rangers 3-2 on Wednesday night.

By David Brown

ST. LOUIS Adrian Beltre of the Texas Rangers hit a chopper to third that he claimed had bounced off his left foot which would make it a foul ball. Only, none of the umpires saw it that way, even after Beltre and manager Ron Washington argued, so he was out. St. Louis Cardinals closer Jason Motte retired the next batter as well, and his team had a 3-2 victory in Game 1.

October 19, 2011
Is this the World Series we've been waiting for? Is the longest wait for the best day in sports about to end?
The ingredients are in place for a World Series that is nine years in the making: one so evenly matched and tightly contested that it takes every possible game to decide it. Baseball has not seen a World Series Game 7 since 2002, when the Angels defeated the Giants. It was so long ago that steroids were in full swing, the last year without testing. Since the best-of-seven format permanently replaced the best-of-nine format in 1922, this is the longest drought without a Game 7 in World Series history.
Why not now?

Rangers turn to Wilson, their ace student of pitching
By David Walstein
October 19, 2011
ST. LOUIS While shopping years ago at the South Coast Plaza mall in Costa Mesa, Calif., the Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer strolled through the mens department at Nordstrom. He got more than the duvet he was looking for.
It was 1997, and C. J. Wilson, then a 17-year-old high school student and aspiring professional and department-store clerk recognized Palmer, a right-hander for the Baltimore Orioles. He was not going to let the opportunity pass him by.
