Giants lose Sorgi and Moss for season

East Rutherford, NJ — NFL teams began trimming their rosters Tuesday, the first step in reaching the 53-man limit by Saturday.

The New York Giants put the backup quarterback Jim Sorgi and wide receiver Sinorice Moss on injured reserve. Sorgi, signed in the spring to back up Eli Manning after spending six seasons in Indianapolis backing up Peyton Manning, injured his shoulder in the preseason opener against the Jets. Sorgi had hoped to return to practice this week, but the Giants think he needs surgery.

New York has a daunting hole to fill behind Manning with Sorgi out. Rhett Bomar and the rookie Dominic Randolph, who signed with the Giants Aug. 19, have never taken a regular season snap. Bomar, a fifth-round pick last season, has completed 29 of 53 passes for 374 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception.

Moss had surgery Tuesday morning to repair a sports hernia. Moss has had an injury-filled four year stint and this likely spells the end of his Giants years, because he is unsigned for 2011. His placement on injured reserve almost assures that the undrafted rookie Victor Cruz, who has had a strong preseason, will make the team.

The Giants also placed the rookie linebacker Adrian Tracy on injured reserve with a dislocated elbow. Tracy had surgery Monday. He is the second draft choice lost for the season. The third-round pick safety Chad Jones is on the reserve non-football injury list after sustaining serious injuries in a car accident this summer.

The Jets waived quarterback Kevin O’Connell, but held on to Kellen Clemens as the third-string quarterback after he agreed to take a pay cut. Clemens will be behind Mark Brunell on the depth chart.
