Uniondale, NY Even when the Philadelphia Flyers don't play their best, they still seem to have plenty of firepower to beat the New York Islanders.
Playing for the second consecutive afternoon, the Flyers erased a third-period deficit and knocked off the Islanders 3-2 on Sunday. Philadelphia beat New Jersey at home on Saturday.
Danny Briere scored the tiebreaking goal with 5:44 left as the Flyers improved to 3-0 against the Islanders this season. Philadelphia has won 21 of the past 23 meetings with New York.
"It seems we just about always find a way to win," Briere said. "Today was a little scary, though."
Matt Carle and Andreas Nodl also scored for Philadelphia, and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 28 shots for the win.
New York had taken a 2-1 lead in the third period on goals by P.A. Parenteau and Frans Nielsen in a span of 36 seconds.
Dwayne Roloson made 24 saves for the Islanders, who lost for the 17th time in 18 games (1-14-3) overall. New York, which has dropped three in a row since ending a 14-game losing streak, went 0-for-4 on the power play and has failed on each of its past 36 advantages over 11 games.
"We have to find a way to win," said Islanders coach Jack Capuano, 1-5-2 since taking over for the fired Scott Gordon. "Roli played well and he gave us a chance to win. We just didn't take advantage of that."
The Flyers took a 1-0 lead with 6:18 left in the first period just after a power play expired. Carle put a rebound past Roloson for his first of the season. Philadelphia held an 8-4 advantage in shots in the period.
The Islanders turned that around in the second when they outshot the Flyers 15-9, but the period was scoreless.
"It was one of those games that could put you to sleep," Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said. "We didn't wake up until about seven minutes into the third period."
New York tied it 1-1 at 5:12 of the third when Parenteau found himself alone in the slot and put a slap shot high to the stick side over Bobrovsky. Nielsen gave the Islanders the lead at 5:48 when his seemingly harmless wrist shot squirted in between Bobrovsky's pads.
"After they took the lead, it seemed to give us a little spark," Briere said.
Nodl got the Flyers even at 2 at 11:34 with a power-play goal off a rebound. Both of Nodl's goals this season have been scored on Long Island.
NOTES: The Flyers have four players who have scored double digits in goals this season. The Islanders have none. ... Philadelphia captain Mike Richards played in his 399th NHL game. ... The Islanders wore their white jerseys at home for the second time this season.
