Cano’s home run caps 9-run sixth for Yankees

New York, NY Miguel Cabrera picked up where he left off Thursday afternoon, but unfortunately for the Detroit Tigers, so did the Yankees offense.
Cabreras two-run homer in the first inning was the only blemish for starter Phil Hughes as the Yankees closed out the four-game series with an 11-5 victory.
Robinson Canos 24th home run of the season capped a nine-run sixth inning, fueling the Yankees to their first series win since July 27 to 29 in Cleveland.
The Yankees were able to withstand Cabreras two home runs the night before, thanks to an offensive barrage of their own in their 9-5 victory. But it was small ball that got things going early on for the Yankees.
Detroit starter Rick Porcello, who shut out the Yankees for seven innings earlier in the season, yielded three consecutive singles in the fourth, the last of which, from Nick Swisher, brought home the Yankees first run. Later in the inning, Curtis Granderson drove home Robinson Cano on another single to tie the score, 2-2.
In the sixth, Porcello (5-11) was chased from the game after a single by Jorge Posada gave the Yankees a 4-2 lead. But the Yankees were far from done.
With the bases loaded and no outs, Austin Kearns gave Hughes (15-5) more than enough breathing room, driving in two runs with a double off of Tigers reliever Robbie Weinhardt to make it 6-2. Derek Jeter added a triple that drove in two more runs and Canos two-run blast closed out the nine-run inning.
Hughes made the most of whatever innings he has left for the regular season, allowing two runs, no walks and striking out six over six innings.
After hitting a rough patch in early July, Hughes has pitched relatively well of late, not allowing more than three runs in any of his last five starts. But until Thursday, he had not won consecutive starts since mid-June, when he capped a five-decision winning streak against the Mets on June 19.
With Andy Pettitte still sidelined with an injured groin, Hughes has been relied upon to steady a rotation that has struggled to stay consistent. But with Hughes up against an innings limit, questions remain about how much longer he will be allowed to do it.
Addressing whether Pettittes lingering injury could affect how Hughes is used for the rest of the season, Manager Joe Girardi said before the game that Hughess situation is independent of everybody else in the rotation.
